Helmed before his 1988 opus 'The Brain' yet following '70s sci-fi stupid-a-thon 'Starship Invasions', chintz director supreme, Ed Hunt sandwiched this 1981 horror flick onto his resume and even though I've been putting it off for many a year, I'm one grateful guy that he did 'cause 'Bloody Birthday' is one helluva ride indeed, packed to the brim with crazy kids, sleazy teens and enough bizarro 'what the hell?' moments to make even Alejandro Jodorowsky do a double take.

One fateful day in the summer of 1970, three children are born at the height of a total eclipse where the sun and moon momentarily block out Saturn - which apparently in astrology terms is a major no-no. Fast forward 10 years and the mini cherubs are now approaching their 10th birthday but something is decidedly 'off' regarding their day-to-day routines. Y'see, these pint-sized Freddy Kruegers’ aren't content by simply playing with their Star Wars figures and instead feel a little slice 'n dice is the order of the day - first by slaughtering local sheriff Brody with a baseball bat then taking a real sadistic shine to the remaining townsfolk living in their close-knit community. However, this demonic trio are rumbled by plucky teen Joyce (Lori Lethin) and her little brother Timmy (K.C. Martel) who have the unenviable task of convincing the authorities that the kids aren't alright and if that fails, take matters into their own hands by putting a ruddy stop once and for all to their infernal muderising!

Yup, this movie has it all - although relatively bloodless, it's sleazy, creepy and downright weird in a way that only '80s slasher flicks can be. Co-writer and director Ed Hunt is one sick puppy and rarely takes his foot off the accelerator - ensuring his movie is non-stop lunacy with enough kid based carnage to fill a million Chucky sequels. Talking of kids, the three child leads - Billy Jayne, Andrew Freeman and Elizabeth Hoy are all uniformly excellent, with standout turns from the creepily charismatic Jayne and the off the chain Hoy. Whoever cast them deserves major kudos as each compliment the others' captivatingly evil performance. As an audience member, you are generally concerned as to what these crazy kids are going to do next and boy, they don't disappoint. With slick direction, Harry Manfredini-lite score by Arlon Ober and a game cast that go above and beyond, 'Bloody Birthday' is the mean spirited gift that keeps on giving and I'm kicking myself for not checking it our earlier.

Shudder present the movie with a so-so transfer and above average audio (the movie sports a TV movie sheen of the time it was made so bear that in mind when viewing), yet I have no hesitation in recommending this early '80s dive into goofball oddity that delivers the icky goods from the get go with plenty of weird characters and eye popping 'did they just do that?' moments that had this fella spitting out his scotch in wild disbelief.
