Spithead, Portsmouth, 1794. Under thundery skies and in lashing rain, a seventeen year old midshipman takes the first tentative steps of his naval career. Horatio Hornblower clambers aboard the ship of the line the Justinian ? known to its intimates as ?the good ship Slough of Despond?. ?His Majesty?s latest bad bargain?, whispers a seaman of the appalled youth as he looks around the crowded, fetid land-based ship. It?s a baptism by fire. Not only is Hornblower awkward, nervous, seasick and afraid of heights, his peers are wary of his intelligence while the resident bully, Midshipman Jack Simpson, adds the new recruit to his list of targets. A suicidal Hornblower writes to his father, telling him how happy he is. When Simpson viciously attacks him, Hornblower pretends to his superiors that he fell. Later when Simpson accuses him of cheating at cards, the personal feud intensifies.

When the war against France worsens, Hornblower and several other men are transferred to the frigate Indefatigable which sets sail for the Bay of Biscay. In command is Captain Sir Edward Pellew, who will become Hornblower?s mentor. The young midshipman is given command of his division of seamen who soon learn to respect him and realise that he is everything that Simpson is not ? kind, conscientious, loyal and honourable. In the Bay of Biscay the Indefatigable captures two French merchant ships. Pellew instructs Hornblower to board one of them ? the Marie Galante ? and sail her back to England.

An action packed adventure on the high seas ensues. With his men firmly behind him, the impressed Captain Pellew remarks: "I see something in you, Mr Hornblower. If you continue in this service as you?ve begun, a great future awaits you". Consumed with passion for defending his country, Hornblower becomes a hero of the high seas, battling gun ships, retrieving sunken tresure and constantly evading capture by his frustrated enemies.
