c976 Michael SHRIEVE Steve ROACH Leaving Time CD 1988 HUIPPUKUNTO Rca Usa  The Leaving Time is a collaborative effort of US based synthesist/composer Steve Roach and veteran Santana percussion virtuoso Michael Shrieve. There are a few guests musicians David Torn and Jonas Hellborg that add yet another "otherworldly" compositional element. Its an interesting cross pollination of musical styles which include ambient, jazz and rock elements which congeal together into an electro-fusion(the term fusion isn't necessarily relegated to jazz btw) of music. I enjoy the fact that Shrieve is/was open to incorporating not only his acoustic drums but electronic drums into the whole compositional scheme as I find many drummers to be too purist and dis-interested in expanding their sound palettes. The same mindset holds true here for Roach as he never uses the atypical Yamaha DX-7 sounds that where much to prevalent during the era this recording was made. Steve Roach carves out amazing stereo interplay with his arsenal of Oberheim and Ensoniq synthesizers where-so the electronics are moving in and out the stereo field and drawing in the listener in their unique sound world. There is a real warmth to choice of sounds used by Roach sort of vintage yet very modern harking back to the 1970s with sequencer driven electronics meeting at the crossroads of rhythmic temples. David Torn adds some very nice guitar loops and choice melodic elements as well as Hellborgs unusual treble like electric bass surges. The dynamics(yes there can be dynamics in electronic music) here in this recording add yet another level of fine production. This recording draws elements of late 70s electronic ala Klaus Schulze / Tangerine Dream, rock drumming and a dab of subtle ambient flourishes. Its unlike anything Roach of Shrieve ever recorded again in their careers and is by far the most rhythmically powerful albums I have heard from Roach. As you can tell I have high praise for this release as it stands MOST electronic music which incorporated sequencers tended to be a drawn out festival of the boring variety. This however is a complete polar opposite and a recording I will continual to listen to with high praise!
