Greatest Story Ever Told:
The life of Christ got an excessively long treatment (260 minutes, later trimmed to 195) in The Greatest Story Ever Told, the 1965 film directed by George Stevens. Max von Sydow does beautiful work as Jesus--his spontaneous mourning at discovering his friend Lazarus has died is not like anything in other New Testament epics--and Stevens renders the familiar tale with a handsome authenticity. But the project is nearly undone by an unwise gimmick in which seemingly half of Hollywood's living stars at the time make brief (often very brief) cameo appearances, some of which are ridiculous (who can forget the sight of John Wayne as a Roman Centurion solemnly intoning, "Truly he was the son of Gaaad"?). But there is a lot to like in the film, and Von Sydow's sensitive nobility sticks in the memory. --Tom Keogh
- Actors ? : ? Max von Sydow, Dorothy McGuire, Charlton Heston, Michael Anderson Jr., Carroll Baker
The Robe:
The first movie ever filmed in CinemaScope®, The Robe was nominated for five Academy Awards® in 1953, including Best picture and Best Actor for Richard Burton. Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, the Roman centurion charged with overseeing the crucifixion, but when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is forever changed. An inspiring story set to a spectacular score and featuring an all-star cast including Victor Mature and Jean Simmons, The Robe remains one of the screen's greatest Biblical epics.
- Actors ? : ? Richard Burton, Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, Michael Rennie, Jay Robinson
The Bible:
The greatest stories of The Old Testament are brought to the screen with astounding scope and power in this international film which depicts the first 22 chapters of Genesis. This is the spectacular story of man's creation, his fall, his survival, and his indomitable faith in the future. Matching the epic scale of the production are performances by George C. Scott as Abraham, Ava Gardner as Sarah and Peter O'Toole as the haunting presence of the Angel of God. The legendary John Huston directs and delivers a commanding performance as Noah. From the film's opening amidst cosmic chaos, to its lingering message of hope and salvation, The Bible stands as a monumental motion picture achievement.
- Actors ? : ? George C. Scott, Ava Gardner, Peter O'Toole, Richard Harris, John Huston
The Agony and Ecstacy:
Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison portray two of the Renaissance's most colorful figures in this historical drama based on Irving Stone's best-seller set in the early 16th century. When Pope Julius ll (Harrison) commissions Michelangelo (Heston) to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the artist initially refuses. Virtually forced to do the job by Julius, he later destroys his own work and flees to Rome. Eventually resumed, the project becomes a battle of wills fueled by artistic and temperamental differences that form the core of this movie. Nominated for an Oscar Cinematography and named one of the year's best films by the National Board of Review.
Song of Bernadette:
One of the rare Hollywood studio films to address spiritual belief and religious conviction in a serious and complex fashion, the beloved classic The Song of Bernadette made a star of its leading lady Jennifer Jones, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress, in addition to taking home a Golden Globe during those awards' very first ceremony (the film also won Globes for Best Dramatic Film and Best Director). A moving portrait of faith, the film is one of the crowning achievements of director Henry King (Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing). Based on the best-selling historical novel by Franz Werfel, the film chronicles the life of 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous, who began seeing visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes, France in 1858. When news of Bernadette's vision first spreads through the town, there are those who decry her as mentally unsound, while others wholeheartedly believe particularly when the spring that erupts near the grotto that housed the visitations contains water that seems to have miraculous healing properties. Buoyed by outstanding supporting performances by Vincent Price, Lee J. Cobb, Charles Bickford, and Gladys Cooper, The Song of Bernadette with sumptuous cinematography by Arthur C. Miller (How Green Was My Valley) is a profoundly affecting drama, no matter what one's own personal beliefs.
- Actors ? : ? Jennifer JONES, Charles BICKFORD, William EYTHE, Vincent PRICE, Lee J COBB
Story of Ruth:
In this epic retelling of the Old Testament story, Elana Eden portrays the beautiful Ruth, who, as a young girl, is sold to worshippers of the stone god Chemosh. As a young woman however, she is moved by the plight of a Jewish slave named Mahlon (Tom Tryon), renounces her idolatry, frees him and befriends his mother, Naomi (Peggy Wood). When tragedy compels the women to make an arduous journey to Jerusalem, Ruth meets Boaz (Stuart Whitman) and falls in love. But as she is promised to another, she must rely on courage, wits and newfound faith to find the peace she's longed for since she can remember.
- Actors ? : ? Elana Eden, Stuart Whitman, Peggy Wood, Tom Tryon, Viveca Lindfors
Francis of Assisi:
Religious epic starring Bradford Dillman. Born into a life of privilege, passion and extravagance, Francis of Assisi (Dillman) would become one of the most beloved and revered saints in history. Trading in his sword for a cross, the lusty adventurer rises to glory, only to see his life's work threatened by a corrupt and jealous church hierarchy.
- Actors ? : ? Bradford Dillman, Dolores Hart, Stuart Whitman, Cecil Kellaway, Eduard Franz
Demetrius and the Gladiators:
Convinced that the Tunic of Christ would assure him an eternal life, the Emperor Caligula seeks to find it by all means. The Tunic is under the protection of Demetrius, a former freed slave. However, he is sentenced for hitting a soldier: he will have to take part in the gladiator fights.
- Actors ? : ? Victor Mature, Susan Hayward, Anne Bancroft, Barry Jones, Ernest Borgnine, Woody Strode
